Multi-thread a deal without undermining your champion
The purpose of multithreading is to help the buying group make a decision, not to collect contacts or bypass a helpful sponsor.
Buying group
Broaden the relationship around useful work
Build decision access without bypassing trust.
- Purpose
- Which decision needs another person?
- Champion
- Agree a helpful introduction together.
- Contribution
- Give the new participant a clear reason to engage.
You have a supportive champion and a growing concern: every update comes through one person. You need to understand the wider buying group, but contacting their colleagues without context could damage the relationship that opened the opportunity.
Multi-threading works best when you and the champion agree which people need to participate in the next decision and why. Broaden the relationship around useful work, with permission and a clear role for your champion. Adding contacts is not progress if those people have no reason to engage.
Start with the decision, not the organization chart
A buying group is more than a list of senior titles. The relevant people depend on what the customer must decide. A technical owner may be essential to evaluating fit. A business sponsor may need to judge priority. Procurement may become relevant when scope and the buying path are clearer.
Ask your champion how the decision will be made and where they expect questions or resistance. This treats them as a partner with valuable knowledge. It also reveals whether they have access to the people whose participation the deal requires.
Avoid assuming that enthusiasm equals influence. A champion can be sincerely supportive and still need help making the case. Your job is to understand that situation without making them feel tested or bypassed.
Offer a reason for each introduction
“Can you introduce me to your CFO?” is a request for access. “Would it help to work through the assumptions Finance will need before approving this?” offers a purpose. The second may lead to a CFO conversation, a finance partner or a better document. Let the customer's process shape the next step.
Before requesting an introduction, be able to explain what the person will gain from participating, what question you will address and how you will keep the champion involved. If you cannot, you may be asking for breadth before you have earned relevance.
A useful introduction is proportionate. A short technical working session may be better than a large executive presentation. A carefully prepared answer may remove the need for another meeting entirely.
A fictional champion needs support, not replacement
Imagine that an operations director supports a new service but expects resistance from IT. The seller sees no IT contact in the account record and considers reaching out directly to the CIO.
A better conversation begins with the director: what will IT need to understand, who usually reviews this kind of service, and would a joint discussion help? The director identifies an architecture lead whose questions concern data access and ongoing responsibility. The seller prepares current, verified material and invites the director to frame the business objective at the start of the meeting.
Afterward, the seller sends a shared summary of what was resolved and what remains open. The champion stays central to the business case while the technical relationship becomes direct enough to answer substantive questions. That is useful multithreading because it strengthens the buying process rather than competing with the champion.
Recognize when the relationship is not broadening
A champion may repeatedly decline introductions. That can reflect politics, a genuine preference for managing the process, insufficient interest or a missing business case. Ask what makes broader involvement difficult before drawing a conclusion.
If the next decision requires another person's participation and there is no credible path to it, record the dependency honestly. Do not compensate by adding contacts through unrelated outreach and treating the account as covered. The seller and manager may need to revise the opportunity's stage or timing while continuing a respectful conversation.
There are situations where a different relationship path is appropriate, but it should be a deliberate commercial judgment. Consider existing commitments, the customer's preferences and the effect on trust. A tool's ability to find an email address is not a reason to use it.
Prepare context that helps people enter the conversation
RevTech's managed sales preparation and Customer Context can help assemble the account history, known roles and questions relevant to a new participant. This supports a better introduction: the specialist or executive can arrive understanding the customer's objective and the reason they were invited.
Keep inferred roles distinct from confirmed ones. A title may suggest responsibility without establishing influence over this purchase. The seller should verify the interpretation with the customer. No agent-generated stakeholder map substitutes for understanding the relationship.
For each important opportunity, ask which decision is next and whose contribution is missing. Then discuss one useful way to involve that person with your champion. The aim is a buying group that can make progress together, not a contact count that looks healthier in the CRM.
